PROCEDURE
Mr. Lindstrom's goal in painting portraits is to create a timeless
painting that is a work of art in its own right. Upon his first
visit Mr. Lindstrom spends time talking with the client and together
they look through his reference portfolio of portraits and photos.
This is both an educational process and a help to the client in
deciding on the direction he or she wants for the portrait. It also
helps the artist understand the clients likes, desires, and needs.
Mr. Lindstrom then does some quick idea sketches" for
composition and poses. Once client and artist agree on the direction
of the painting, Mr. Lindstrom then uses his camera to record various
poses and expressions along with the sketches and color notes. This
usually requires a full morning or afternoon.
In the following weeks, Bart sends the client a more detailed sketch
accompanied by a selection of recommended photographs.
After the client approves the composition, Mr. Lindstrom then paints
a small painting for color and values. This small study shows the
client the feeling and mood of the proposed portrait. The color
study shows the patterns of light and harmonies of color. This gives
the client a good idea of the artists direction in the creative
process and gives opportunity for input before Bart begins the portrait.
Mr. Lindstrom has found that this approach of working closely with
the subject during the creative process gives a sense of involvement
and eliminates surprises when the painting is unveiled. Such involvement
is very reassuring to the client. Once he has received approval
of the color study from the client, Mr. Lindstrom then creates the
painting.
Upon delivery the client will have the option of a final sitting
for minor corrections and changes. The entire process of creating
the portrait, from first sketch to delivery, usually requires six
to ten months.
