It is fun to have a five-year-old, like Poppy, who is excited and happy to have her portrait painted.

Mary Cassatt famously said, "I love to paint children. They are so natural and truthful."

I added side light flowing through the orchid which gives this painting a special feeling of sunlight and makes the orchid come to life.

Side lighting in still life oil painting is the premier technique for creating dramatic contrast, depth, and three-dimensional form by illuminating about three-quarters of the subject.

Orchid & Sunshine is currently on display at Beverly McNeil Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama.

Placing the dog in a relaxing position within the portrait on the couch was a good option, the family was happy, so was I.
