Combining the beauty of nature and the subject of the portrait you can create a harmonious image where the subject is integrated with, rather than simply placed in front of, their surroundings.

And you can never go wrong with painting girls surrounded by flowers.

Sometimes Less is More ...

There is a trend to create a more contemporary look in a portrait with a minimal approach, focusing only on the child’s face and hair,

Sometimes less IS more, and simple can be quite enchanting.

"David" 14 x 18 Oil on Panel Bart Lindstrom 2025
Sometimes we’re forced into doing something that we normally wouldn’t do. Like painting a blonde child with a white shirt on a white background.

David is the fourth child in a series and all the other portraits for his siblings were on the light background and when I photographed David, I didn’t really think about the white shirt. I thought of changing the shirt to blue or yellow, but then decided to just go with the challenge of a white shirt on a light background.  A little uncomfortable but fun to try.

It’s nice to sometimes push yourself out of your comfort zone.  Just go ahead and dive in and do it and see what the results are. All in all, I’m happy and the client was happy too.

Big Smiles

Smiles were historically rare in “Western art”, as showing teeth was often considered a sign of low character or a display of insincerity. Today, artists use smiles to portray a range of emotions, and a smile can make a portrait more engaging or convey a specific message, especially when you have a happy, active child, the big smile seems to capture them best.

Light & Shadow

Charcoal's inherent ability to create strong contrasts between light and dark (known as chiaroscuro) adds a dramatic and captivating quality.

By carefully manipulating highlights (where light reflects off a surface) and shadows, I can define the edges of forms, suggest depth, and create a powerful sense of realism.

Painting History

Chinese emperors, throughout various dynasties, were often buried with a wealth of artifacts, including ceramics, to accompany them into the afterlife.

These burial objects were chosen to ensure the deceased could live as comfortably in the afterlife as they did in life and could include various items like weapons, utensils, and figures representing servants.

The eyes can capture the mood of the portrait and the true essence my subject.

It isn’t in vain when we call eyes the window to a person’s soul.
